Mental landscapes: Seeing in 3D

Many thousands of retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) have to relay signals through the eye's optic nerve via delicate projections, or axons, to precise locations on both sides of the brain that make visual sense of it all, especially to perceive depth. Sometimes it doesn't work out so well, but new insight into the development of visual systems is opening potential pathways to salvaging vision when injury or disease takes it away.
